creating the shares

First to identify the disk and cause it to auto-mount at boot.

sudo lshw -C disk

identified all the attached drives.

sudo fdisk /dev/sdb -l > filesystem.txt

sudo parted /dev/sdb print

shows all the mount points on the disk numbered sequentially which allowed me to add a line to  /etc/fstab

/dev/sdb6    /media/dszsd/storage     xfs     defaults     0     2

and to complete the job

sudo mount -a

Now to make the files visible on the network:

sudo apt-get install samba
sudo smbpasswd -a <user_name>
sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf

added this at the very end of the file

path = /path/to/network/folder/name
available = yes
valid users = <user_name>
read only = no
browseable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes

sudo restart smbd
